Make it official: getting licensed

E-mail Print PDF

The State of Texas allows some flexibility in getting a marriage license. You do not have to get your license in the same county in which you are married. So if you and your fiance are planning your wedding in a city other than the wedding destination, don't worry! As long as the two of you can manage to get to the same city one of the 30 days prior to your wedding, you'll be OK. (But remember, Texas has a 72-hour waiting period one the license is issued.)

Smith County offer two licensing options for couples. The regular fee is $67. However, if you choose to participate in a state-approved marital counseling program totalling eight hours, the fee for your license is only $7, and the waiting period is waived as well.

Both parties must be present and must be at least 18 years old. Bring your driver's license, and know your Social Security Number as well as your birth city, county and state.
